STRAY dogs are being skewered on hooks and dragged behind boats as live shark bait. The cruel practice takes place on French-controlled Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean. A six-month-old labrador pup was recently found ALIVE with a huge double hook through its snout, and another through a leg. The pup was found in a coastal creek and is thought to have somehow freed itself from a fishing line, but other dogs and kittens have been chomped up and swallowed by sharks.

This was on one of my myspace bulletins, but i thought other people should know about this...its terrible

Rabies is rampant in that country. So, what to do? Beat strays to death with boards, of course. Don't want to risk shooting them in a city that crowded! Can't round them up and risk being bitten!

It goes for thousands of dollars a bowl and is a delicacy in some countries.

They catch the sharks, cut the fins off, and toss the LIVE sharks back into the ocean. They sink to the bottom and either suffocate (they can't breathe unless they can swim, no fins, no swim) or something comes along and eats them. ALIVE! Can you imagine the pain?

I used to cry over each and every story too. Then I realized that, no matter what we do, there will always be another horror story. People are terrible. Whether its a little boy setting his cat on fire, or an entire nation who exploit animals, it will never end.

It sounds horrible. Some territories have customs that we in the USA find disgusting but this may be their way of controlling the stray pet population. I think it is equally cruel to euthanize stray dogs and cats in the USA. Who is right?

Why don,t people learn theses dogs and cats all pets have fillings and pain and cry out for help as real people do.sad see tears running down a pet face sad and lonly, sad see them in pain hurt by mean sick people. brakes my heart when hear or see this.

I agree with Debbi about the part that some countries have different cultures etc. But, I still don't think it is even close to being right that we euthanise our animals, and France has no right to do that to poor animals, IT'S CALLED ANIMAL CRUELTY PEOPLE. No matter how human it is. People go to jail for humaly killing a person who asked for the other person to do it and wanted it. It's unfair.

So that first link you posted as a refrance is actually calling this story an urban legend, and is debating the story's truth. They state that the picture may have been taken of an accidental incounter a dog had with fishing supplies, and was circulated by PETA and other animal rights extremist groups with this story...PETA is known for exaggerating the truth, and flat out lieing to get attention towards their cause. I personally don't trust anything PETA does. Other news sources got a hold of this article that may - or may not- be true as a result of animal rights extremists pushing it...It seems like there may have been a couple cases of this, but the people doing it were already hunting illegally, and it is not a common practice.

If it is true, then yeah it is very sad, but I really doubt that it is fully accurate (there may be a bit of truth to it). Wouldn't useing raw meat be more effective as bait? Sharks smell the blood, their sight isn't very good, they wouldnt be able to tell the difference between an alive dog, and a dead peice of meat if it were being towed behind a boat. They would be more attracted to the meat because of the smell of blood...

I looked at the picture of the dog and I must say I am furious. How could people do that, that is low even for French, we must do something or my God I will go to that sorry excuse for a country and show them what it feels like to be strapped to a boat and used for bait!!!!!
